What is respiration?

All living things in this world breathe in oxygen. Oxygen diffuses into the blood and is used to oxidise food during respiration. Are the processes of breathing and respirastion the same? How air is inhaled into our lungs and then exhaled?

In this chapter, you will learn about human respiratory organs, breathing mechanism, and how oxygen is used in the cells to oxidise food.

The human respiratory system consists of
a) breathing organs (nasal cavity, trachea, bronchus, bronchiole and lungs)
b) ribs
c) diaphragm
d) intercostal muscles

You must memorize all the parts of structure in respiratory system. The question always ask you about the labelling the parts!!

The 3 parts in the lungs also are very important to understand. Its start from bronchus, bronchiole and last part is alveolus.

All the notes about functions of each part are very important. The questions always ask about the function after you make a labelling. Please understand all the functions. The most important here is the keywords that yauo want to use...
NASAL CAVITY = the important keywords is WARM, MOISTEN AND FILTER FINE PARTICLES

Trachea = CHANNEL AIR INTO BRONCHUS

Intercostal muscles = CONTRACT AND RELAXES IN BREATHING PROCESS

Ribs = PROTECT THE LUNGS

Diaphragm = MUSCLE FOR CONTRACT AND RELAX IN BREATHING

This is the most important part that you must understand. The keywords here is - THIN WALL, MOIST AND CONTAINS NETWORK OF BLOOD CAPILLARIES

This is the sequence of air movement starts from nose (nasal cavity) until alveolus.
Make sure you remember the sequences and also the spelling.

Breathing mechanism involves 2 physical processes, i.e
INHALATION
EXHALATION

The important keyword here for inhalation = air is taken into the lungs

Air is expelled / taken out form lungs

Wow! This part is the very famous questions...about the process happen when inhale and exhale..
so class, make sure you understand and know the keywords to answer the question..
Its simple - just remember the parts and after that you should know how to answer..
word MUSCLE = must have word contract / relaxes
word RIBS = word upwards / downwards and outwards and inwards
Class, for the volume thoracic cavity, air pressure - almost the important things you should know. please take notes with the word volume (isipadu) and use the pressure concept (air move from high to low pressure).

Students must know the concept of activity that relate with this topic
#famous questions

You must understand the =
Aim
Analogies of each part
Observation
Conclusion

Science corridor...
1. Respiration is divided into external respiration and internal respiration.
2. External respiration (breathing) is the exchange of gases (physical process) between the human body and the air surrounding it.
3. Internal respiration (cell respiration or tissue respiration) is a chemical process in which food is oxidised in the cells of the body to release energy.
4. Trachea is a tube that is about 10 cm long
5. The lungs of an adult can contain up to 5 litres of air. During normal breathing, only half a litre of air is breathed in and out
6. The C-shaped coil along the trachea keeps it from being deflated
7.When we swallow food, a layer of tissue called epiglotis covers the opening in the trachea and prevents food from entering it.
THINK THANK!!
1. What is the function of nose hair?
2. Name the structure in the lungs which looks like a bunch of grapes?
